3 Minutes read

When we think of Dalhousie, the first things that come to mind are British-era architecture, greenery, churches, and a peaceful vibe. But what if we told you could witness something extraordinary from here? A view so rare that people travel to Tibet to see it. The home of Shiva, Mount Kailash. No, we are not kidding. But how? Keep reading because this is a story you don’t want to miss!

The Dainkund hike

You only need a little hike to catch a glimpse of Mount Kailash. (Okay, maybe not so little.) A hike to Dainkund, the highest peak in Dalhousie, stands at about 2,755 meters above sea level. At the top, you’ll find Pholoni Mata Temple, and from there, you can see Mount Kailash but only if the weather conditions are just right. You’ll also get a breathtaking 360-degree view of the valley.

The hike takes around two to three hours, but trust us, it’s not that difficult. And if you feel tired midway, that’s just the universe telling you to take a chai and snack break. You’ll find plenty of stalls along the way.

The legend of Dainkund

Before you begin the hike, you should know the folklore behind Dainkund. The name Dainkund means ‘Lake of the Witches’. During ancient times, witches were believed to live there and trouble the villagers. The villagers unanimously prayed to the forest deity, Pholoni Mata, to help them end their misery.

Pholoni Mata defeated the witches, freeing the region from their presence. The Pholoni Mata Temple at the top serves as a memorial to her, and legend has it that the howling winds still carry the voices of those spirits.

Pro tip: Reach before the sunset. You won’t regret it. One side of the temple offers a view of Mount Kailash, while the other side treats you to a sunset.

What to expect from the Dainkund hike?

Whether you're a photographer looking for the perfect shot, a meditator in search of a peaceful spot, or simply a nature lover, this place has something for everyone. (Unless you're too lazy to climb a mountain.)

But as we said earlier, the hike is not too difficult, it’s suitable even for beginners.

  • Hike duration: The hike is about 4.5 kilometres and usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the peak. (Obviously, depending on your speed.)
  • Best time to visit: If you’re going specifically for Mount Kailash, visit between March and June or September and November when the weather is clear, giving you a better chance to see Mount Kailash. The mountains are covered in snow between December and February, making the hike difficult. But if you're ready for it, the views in the snow are beautiful.
