Okay, let’s be honest. When you’re planning a trip, what’s the first thing you Google? “Best food in XYZ.” Don’t lie, I do it too. Because good food can literally make or break a trip. And Dharamshala is going to make your trip, because there are sooo many food options.

Also, shopping scenes here are bang on too. From colourful markets to cute little local finds, you’re going to need an extra bag (or two).

So, here’s everything you will get to eat and shop in Dharamshala. Also note: We’re skipping the basic stuff like momos and pizzas (because duh, woh toh har jagah milte hai).

Food scenes in Dharamshala

Thukpa

Dharamshala has a great influence of Tibetan food. So, thukpa is a must-try. Loaded with noodles, veggies or meat, and that spicy broth, thukpa is literally a winter lifesaver. The garlic-chilli aroma hits you before the bowl even reaches the table. And that first slurp? A whole mood.

Chha Gosht

So you’re a meat lover? Chha Gosht is that rich, flavourful Himachali dish that’ll make you want to text your group chat, “Y’all missing out!” It’s mutton slow-cooked in a tangy yoghurt gravy, infused with spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and bay leaves. The meat’s so tender, it practically melts. Pair it with hot rice or chapatis.

Looks so wholesome, right?

Shapta

Ever had food so good it makes you emotional? That’s shapta for you. A spicy Tibetan stir-fry, shapta is basically thinly sliced meat cooked with garlic, dried red chillies, onions, and vibes. The dish packs a serious punch and has just the right amount of smoky heat to keep you reaching for more. Best enjoyed with tingmo (Tibetan steamed bread that’s soft and fluffy).

Siddu

Siddu is one of those dishes you shouldn’t miss when in the mountains. And in Dharamshala, you can expect good siddu. Rather than going to a restaurant, try finding it at a local dhabha or street-side stall for a more authentic experience. It’s a warm, steamed bun, stuffed with crushed walnuts, poppy seeds, and sometimes paneer, oozing with ghee. It’s comfort food that feels like a hug.

Alu Phing Sha

It’s a Tibetan-Himachali fusion where glass noodles get tangled up with spicy potatoes and tender mutton chunks. The springy noodles soak in all the flavours and the result is pure gold. It’s earthy, rich, and spicy in the best way. This is the kind of dish you order “just to try” and then end up guarding the plate like a dragon.

Having this for lunch and a nap after and is this what heaven feels like?

Dham

Dham isn’t just a dish, it’s a full-on experience. Traditionally served during festivals and big celebrations, dham is a vegetarian spread that’ll leave you full but still reaching for one more bite. You’ll get rice, madra (chickpeas in a creamy yoghurt gravy), mash daal, khatta (a tangy sauce/curry), and sweet rice (meethe chawal) — all served on leaf plates. It’s simple and soulful.

They say money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy a plate of Dham

Tudkiya Bhat

Tudkiya Bhat is a Himachali-style rice dish cooked with potatoes, onions, garlic, and a blend of whole spices like bay leaves and cinnamon. There’s something so homely and comforting about this dish, especially when it’s served with a spoonful of curd and a squeeze of lemon. It’s not too spicy but full of flavour.

Tibetan Bread with local honey

You haven’t had breakfast in Dharamshala if you didn’t try Tibetan bread. It’s slightly chewy, slightly crispy, and amazing when toasted and topped with local wildflower honey. The bread itself is pretty simple, but that combo of warm bread and sweet honey hits just right.

Masala Chai with Tibetan Butter

Okay, hear me out, chai with butter? Sounds weird, I know. But Dharamshala’s weather makes this weird combo taste so right. The butter gives the chai a creamy, velvety texture and adds an earthy richness that your regular masala chai just doesn’t have. It’s perfect for those foggy mornings or bonfire evenings.

Bhagsu Cake

Named after the famous Bhagsunag area, this treat has earned itself cult status in Dharamshala and nearby places. It’s a crumbly biscuit base, layered with rich, gooey caramel, and topped with a glossy slab of chocolate. Pair it with a hot chocolate or a masala chai — you’re going to love it.

Shopping scenes in Dharamshala

Dharamshala isn’t just about scenic hikes and food, there’s a lot to shop for. The markets here are vibrant, full of colour, and honestly, it’s hard to walk through them without picking something up. So if you plan to return home empty-handed, good luck with that.

McLeodganj Market

You’ll find Tibetan flags flapping in the wind, stalls selling handwoven shawls, funky jewellery, and even those cute beaded bracelets in McLeodganj Market. There are bookstores, local handicrafts, woollen clothes, and even some unique thangka paintings if you’re into art. It’s also the best place to buy wool mufflers and bags that look straight outta Pinterest.

Kotwali Bazaar

Perfect if you want a more local, everyday shopping vibe. This place is where locals come for their essentials. But you can find some hidden pieces. You’ll find some amazing woollen socks, locally made slippers, and little trinkets that make for cute, budget-friendly gifts.

Aren’t you feeling like buying them all?

So yeah, if you're heading to Dharamshala, go with an empty stomach and a half-empty bag. Because the food will leave you full and happy, and the markets will tempt you into shopping like there’s no tomorrow. Now go book those tickets.
